This is almost invisible yet extremely helpful feature of FireFox web browser.

The two great inventions - middle button in mice and the Web - emerged virtually simultaneously (though independently). And they made a really great tandem: when you click links you control at ease whether they open in a new window by simply choosing a mouse button - left or middle. That simple.

Yet, internet tricksters turn up here and there (surprisingly or not - much more notably so in former USSR (CIS) web space) who abuse the early-internet oversighted adoption of the target attribute for the <a> anchor tag. As you know, when this attribute is set to “_blank” the linked page opens in a new window regardless of the site visitor’s choice.

That’s annoying. Just try to imagine Google SERP with ALL the links in the results page with such behavior. Unimaginable. Absolutely. Nevertheless, major search engines in Russia & Ukraine feature this. Some sites in the “developed” world unfortunately still do so too.

Now FireFox has come to get back the web. This “_blank” weirdness is easily cured in standard UI.

But what about Opera? It’s a nice browser having great deal of appeals compared even to wildly growing in popularity FireFox, and it lacks this much needed control.

There’s a solution for Opera as well. It’s through User JavaScript. Very cool.

Напомню, с сентября 2006 компания “Воля” (ТМ «Воля Бродбенд») начала суровое наступление на мелких провайдеров скоростного домашнего интернет-доступа в Киеве. Наиболее массовый тарифный план на “Воле” традиционно охарактеризовался самой высокой ценой трафика, которая, тем не менее, оказалась ниже самых низких цен у всех конкурентов! Многие “домашние сети” может постигнуть крах уже в ближайшее время.

Что касается новой “акции”, то с ноября уже нельзя подключиться на самый доступный тарифный план “Воли” непосредственно - теперь необходимо на первый месяц обслуживания оплатить более дорогой пакет. Для широкой публики это означает скрытую плату за подключение - ведь её вынуждают купить ненужный трафик, пусть даже только для начала. Провайдеру это, помимо слегка завышенных продаж, даёт также шанс увлечь новых клиентов на большее потребление: пользователь, который будет стараться потратить весь лишний трафик в первый месяц пользования, рискует получить дурную привычку и остаться на более дорогом плане. Что вызовет дальнейший успех продавца.

Кстати, “Воля Бродбенд” совершает большую ошибку, по старинке включая в рекламу слова “трафик по цене от …” В приёме “bait and switch” теперь нет никакой необходимости ввиду вышеупомянутого сравнения с конкурентами. Наоборот, такие слова уже стойко воспринимаются потребителем как спам. Сейчас и здесь, несомненно, просто гигантского эффекта достигло бы контрастное “трафик по цене до …“

A quick review for freelancing sites revealed a bunch of exciting material.
Besides the wide range of commissions charged, multiplicity of said sites and all the consequences arising from that, one particular thing has drawn my attention.

The two sites - GetACoder.com and GetAFreelancer.com - look very much alike. Closer examination showed even more stunning similarities - the sites are word-for-word copies of each other (except dynamic content, of course). They were definitely inviting for further investigation.

Today is the absolute total end of the summer: “summer time” has been switched off. Every time this happens (in fall as well as in spring) a question arises: how to remember which way the hour gets? Does it come or does it go?

It’s easy: the autumn is seen by some as the season of depression. So in autumn you are credited with an extra hour to have a longer sleep on one of the autumn’s Sundays, which presumable will help a bit in fighting depression. On the other hand, in spring time you’re likely to have an uprise, so it’s a good time to pay your credit back by sacrificing an hour.

Okay, I don’t mean for you to comply and get into depression just because some believe it’s time to. (Though it might be beneficial for memorizing “the hour rule”.) Moreover, depression is better fought by means additional to the extra hour sleep. Some say chocolate & cheese surely help. Yet others go further and testify: no Jesus - no peace, know Jesus - know peace. The choice of cure is yours.

Совершенно неожиданное событие: ПэйПэл (также известный как ПэйПол) решил двигаться в страны СНГ - в список официально поддерживаемых государств добавились Украина и Российская Федерация.

Серьёзное ограничение пока ещё остаётся: нельзя принимать деньги извне и обналичивать деньги со счёта PayPal. Но прогресс всё равно невиданный - теперь украинским гражданам не нужно притворяться поляками или кем-то ещё, чтобы только открыть счёт и заплатить деньги!

Почему PayPal не разрешает принимать деньги и обналичивать? Возможно, они считают, что отслеживать товар, купленный нелегально, намного проще, чем банкноты, а возможно просто не договорились с руководством страны о разделе налогов с продаж клиентов - сейчас ведь единственный способ обналичивания - это через американских друзей (или польских или ещё - у кого кто), которые будут платить налоги с полученных денег в своей стране.

Ладно, и на том спасибо, всё таки это уже хороший стимул для интенсификации онлайн бизнеса, а там глядишь - и разрешат обналичивание после вступления Украины в ВТО (Всемирная Торговая Организация, WTO, World Trade Organization). Говорят ведь - нет худа без добра.

Уже сейчас просматривается корреляция между переговорами Украина - ВТО и открытием PayPal для Украины. По всеобщему мнению ВТО, хотя и нацелена на продвижение идеи “свободной торговли”, является интсрументом повышения контраста между богатыми и бедными - эта организация богатых делает богаче (касается как людей, так и стран). В то же время, открытие системы PayPal “только на выход” как раз подчёркивает желательное для запада направление денежных потоков: одно дело перевести безналично деньги через PayPal из Украины, совсем другое - перевезти наличные обратно через несколько государственных границ…

The last cold winter (probably coldest in the last 10 years!) provoked installation of a new radiator for this season. One of the issues about installation was pipe configuration.

The original pipe configuration provided for a by-pass in which water flow could not be cut (i.e. it had no valve) and a single side pipe-to-radiator attachment. As you can see the old system is pretty much simplified in this manner.

Now that common people are becoming more familiar with computing the computer userbase is gradually pushed back to using text input (in contrast to “point & click” interface popularized by earlier versions of Windows and suchlike)
